the kiln

Monocacy River Pottery employs a large 3-chambered noborigama style kiln for our community firings.

The first chamber of the noborigama is wood only. Chambers two and three are salt and soda fired.

The first chamber produces wares that have rich flashing, natural ash glaze effects and a variety of shino surfaces. The second and third chambers can produce a wide variety of amazing effects on glazed surfaces, flashing on slipped or bare clay, orange peel, rivulets, carbon trapping and other surprises!

Please see the gallery for examples of the exciting ceramic surfaces our kiln can create!
